GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Walla Walla University Women's Soccer continued Cascade Collegiate Conference play Thursday afternoon, falling to the University of Providence 2-1.
The Wolves faced pressure early as Providence created the first scoring opportunity in the seventh minute, but Walla Walla's defense blocked a shot from Jaelyn Chandonnet.
Providence continued to apply pressure and took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. A ball played into the box deflected off a Walla Walla defender and fell to Shea Waters, who finished past the Wolves' goalkeeper Allanah Rodriguez.
Walla Walla worked to respond but entered halftime trailing 1-0 after Providence recorded six shots in the opening 45 minutes.
The Wolves came out with increased pressure to begin the second half, recording three shots during the opening 10 minutes. Walla Walla continued to battle as the match went back and forth, but Providence extended its lead in the 68th minute when Simona Rizzon scored from just outside the box.
Walla Walla continued to push and cut into the deficit late in the match. In the 87th minute, Anacel Valenzuela-Acosta found the back of the net to bring the Wolves within one.
The Wolves pressed for an equalizer in the final minutes, but Providence's defense held strong as Walla Walla fell 2-1.
Walla Walla will continue CCC play at home on October 2nd, hosting Corban University. Kick-off is set for noon.
