Wolves Battle Nationally Ranked #25 Yotes in 3 Set Loss

11/8/2015 1:08:00 AM

Box Score COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. - Walla Walla University finished their first year in the Cascade Conference against visiting College of Idaho. C of I hit for .316 and scored 7 aces in their win over Walla Walla 25-18, 25-19, 25-16.

For the second straight match, the Wolves (7-19, 3-17) took on a nationally ranked team, this time #25 College of Idaho (18-10, 16-4), and gave them a run for their money. Both teams traded points back and forth with neither team gaining much of a lead until C of I's Amanda Crist got to the service line. Although she didn't get any aces, her serve put the wolves on the defensive and they couldn't get a quality attack on any ball. Abbey Fenton and Kylie Porter took full advantage of this and were able to push the Yotes to a 10-6 lead. Behind outstanding defense by libero Rylee Sutton, the Wolves were able to close the gap to 17-18 but serve receive continued to be a problem for the Wolves as they allowed Emilee Chapman to serve the game out and take the win for the College of Idaho, 25-18.

The second set saw another early battle by both teams. The game saw four ties by the time both teams reached 11 points. Freshman Morgan Doyle entered the match for the Wolves and gave the team a spark by getting 4 kills and a solo block but it wasn't enough to overcome the duo of Abbey and Kylie who found their grove and led their team to another set victory, 25-19.

Set three saw the Wolves jump out to a 5-1 led behind aggressive serving by Maria Darling. The Yotes wouldn't let the Wolves get any more lead than that as they fought back and tied the game up at 8. The rest of the match belonged to the College of Idaho's Kylie Porter who racked up 7 kills in the set and led her team to a 25-16 win.

College of Idaho was led by Kylie Porter with 16 kills and a hitting efficiency of .714. Helping her was setter Sierra Porter with 33 assists and with a match high 18 digs, Kilee Lopez. Alaina Slater added 2 solo blocks to go with her 2 block assists.

Walla Walla University used a balanced attack for their offense. Morgan Doyle and Lexi Shanko each had 7 kills while Emily Allen and Perri Shanko added 5 kills each. Setters Alissa Casey and Lauren Bosler each had 13 assists while the defense was led by Rylee Sutton and Maria Darling with 12 and 10 digs respectively.

This ends the first season in the Cascade Conference for Walla Walla University. The College of Idaho will continue play as they advance to post season play. For full details on the CCC Tournament and the final regular-season CCC standings, visit the CCC website.
