WWU Starts Strong but Falls to #8 Southern Oregon

Box Score COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. - The Wolves of Walla Walla University were swept in three sets (25-19, 25-10, 25-13) on Windemuth Court by the #8 ranked Southern Oregon University Raiders volleyball team in a Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) match on Saturday. The Wolves are 6-8 and 2-6 in conference play while the Raiders improve to 15-0 and 8-0 in the conference.

 In the first set Alissa Casey started strong by opening the match with an ace. Teammate Lexi Shanko gave the Wolves a 4-3 lead with her first kill of the set. Strong blocking by Emily Allen and Melissa Barton who racked up two blocks each had the Raiders on the defensive for the first half of the set. The second half was all Raiders. With the score tied at 12 the Raiders went on a three point run and never looked back.

In the second set, the Raiders went on a 7-0 run behind the strong play of Emma Gasman who ended with six kills and a hitting percentage of .750. Emily Allen stopped the run with a kill of her own but the Wolves were unable to recover, giving up the second set 25-10.

Set three went much the same as set two with Southern Oregon taking the win 25-12. Stat leaders for the Raiders were Tyana Andrews with a match high 11 kills followed by Emma Gasman with nine kills and eight blocks. Lauren McGowne had a match high twenty eight assists and Ashlyn Flynn had fourteen digs.

Stat leaders for the Wolves were Maria Darling and Melissa Barton with eight and five kills respectively. Lauren Bosler had twelve assists while Alissa Casey had eleven. Lexi Shanko and Rylee Sutton each contributed ten digs.

The Wolves are on the road next week at Northwest University and Evergreen State.
