Wolves Hot Starts Not Enough Against Eagles

Seattle, Wash. –  The Wolves gave Northwest University (16-7, 13-5) their best shot Saturday night, pushing the Eagles early in the first and third sets. However, the Eagles strong defense and high powered attack proved too much for Walla Walla (1-20, 0-17) as they beat the Wolves in three straight sets.

A block by Melissa Barton started off the night and gave the Wolves the opening point of the match.  This would be the start of a back and forth tussle that would see WWU and NU exchange points well into the first set.  A serving ace by Lauren Barlow put Walla Walla up 5-2, giving them their biggest lead in the match.  A few minutes later a kill by Lauren made it 9-7 but from there the Eagles would take control. A combination of kills by the Eagles and attack errors from the Wolves would be too much for Walla Walla to overcome as Northwest took the set 25 to 16.

In the second set, Northwest jumped out on the Wolves right away 5-2. However, the Wolves stormed back into the match and took back the lead, 7-6, following an NU attack error.  From there the Eagles would go on a 6-0 run, and after a kill by Hannah Hanson Walla Walla was forced to take a timeout. The Wolves had one more run in them and a Lauren Barlow kill would make the score 14-12.  The Eagles attack intensified at this point and NU would record six kills in their next 10 points.  Mattie Keltner ended things with a service ace and Northwest took the second set 25-17.

The third set started similar to the first with both teams matching each other score for score well into the teens.  Both teams exchanged kills back and forth and forced each other into hitting errors throughout the set.  A kill by Maria Darling tied the score at 13-13.  From there, Northwest would do just enough to stay ahead of the Wolves.  Morgan Doyle would score the 18th point off a set by Krista Schafer but that would be the last point scored in the match for the Wolves.  The Eagles recorded the last five points of the set and took the match 25-18.

Lauren Barlow led the Wolves in kills with eight, while Brandy Woodward and Krista Schafer each had 11 assists. Carly Ursino, from Puget Sound Adventist Academy, located just down the road from Northwest University, finished with 11 digs.  We would like to thank the Puget Sound community for coming out to the match and supporting the Wolves.

WWU heads to Olympia tomorrow to take on the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College.  The Wolves took the Geoducks to four sets the last time to two teams met.
