Wolves Rally from Slow Start but Can’t Quite Upset Geoducks

Olympia, Wash. – The Wolves met a Geoducks team celebrating their Senior Day and despite their own inspiring performance in the second set, couldn't break through for a win. Evergreen (5-20, 4-14) won in four sets today 25-12, 16-25, 25-16, 25-15. Walla Walla (1-21, 0-18) played well in the back row on defense but could not come up with enough stops to get the win.

Evergreen took control early in the first set with Natalie Taylor and Chloee Hunt combining for eight kills, while the Wolves managed only five kills and struggled to create any flow on offense. Natalie Taylor ended the first set with a kill, assisted by Kylie Kytan, who finished with 40 assists on the night.

Walla Walla found their grove in the second set as back to back kills by Emily Allen set the tone early and tied things up at 4-4. Melissa Barton, Lauren Barlow and Emily led the charge for the Wolves as they slowly took over control. The Wolves went on a six to one run to end the set 25-16.

The third and four sets played out similarly as the Geoducks methodically took control and slowly grew their lead before pulling away late for the win. The Wolves had their moments in both sets, but the play from Chloee Hunt, Jordan Porter and Natalie Taylor, who all had over a dozen kills, respectively, was too much for the Wolves to gain control.

Melissa Barton and Lauren Barlow each had nine kills for the Wolves, while Emily Allen had eight and a hitting percentage of .700 for the match. Maria Darling had 7 kills and 16 digs and Barlow racked up 18 digs of her own. Krista Schafer and Brandy Woodward split duty at setter and had 14 and 11 assists, respectively.

The Wolves travel to Eastern Oregon to take on the #7 Mountaineers on Thursday evening. Saturday night they are back on the road for their final match of the year against College of Idaho.
