College Place, Wash. – The Cascade Collegiate Conference sixth-ranked College of Idaho Yotes were in town Saturday night to face the Wolves of Walla Walla University in what was the Wolves' first game back after the long Christmas break.
The two teams looked understandably rusty in the opening stages of the game as both teams played solid defense, yet struggled to score. After being knotted up at 5-5, Emily Harwood led the Yotes on a 16-0 run to stun the Wolves and gain a sudden 21-5 lead with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Yotes' rampant run was finally put to rest when
Morgan Stanyer nailed a mid-range jumper off a pretty assist from
Carolina Montes.
The shooting struggles for the Wolves continued in the early stages of the second quarter as neither team managed to score until College of Idaho senior Alyssa Case hit a pair of free throws with seven minutes left in the half. As the Wolves remained stagnant, the Yotes began to find their rhythm, compiling a 14-0 run before
Carolina Montes buried a three to make the score 35-12. The College of Idaho headed into the halftime break with a great deal of confidence as their lead had ballooned to 27 at 40-13.
The third quarter belonged entirely to the Yotes' senior guard Madison Holly, who erupted for 10 points in the first five minutes of the second half. The Wolves were unable to keep the pace with Holly and the rest of the Yotes offense, giving up 29 points in the third quarter on their way to a 43-point deficit heading into the fourth.
The final quarter was reminiscent of the previous three as the Yotes continued to dish and swish from beyond the arc. With four minutes remaining, Yotes' sophomore guard Makenna Schritter hit a three to extend the lead to 51 at 80-29. The offensive prowess of Emily Harwood sustained the Yotes through the remainder of the game, as the Wolves took the loss by a score of 90-32.
The Yotes were led by Madison Holly, who had a game-high 21 points, while
Carolina Montes led the Wolves attack with 19 points.
The Wolves won't have much time to recover and re-strategize before they gear up to face the College of Idaho again tomorrow at 3:00p.m. here in College Place.
