Eugene, Ore. – The Wolves traveled to Eugene, Ore. to the Morse Event Center to open their season against the Deacons of New Hope University (Ore.). The Wolves looked to build off productive practices earlier in the week, but would fall in straight sets to the Deacons.
Earlier in the day, the Wolves started out with a scrimmage against Chemeketa, taking the Storm to a fourth set. Looking to build off their playing experience against the Storm, the Wolves looked to be aggressive in their attack against the Deacons. The Wolves pushed the opening set into the 30's, but would eventually fall in the set, 33-35.
Walla Walla looked to rebound off a closely fought first set, but would start the second set in a 10-2 deficit. The Wolves were not able to rebound off the Deacons early run and would eventually fall in the second set, 10-25.
The third set had the Wolves and Deacons knotted at 17 before the Deacons closed the game on an 8-3 run to win the deciding set, 25-20.
The Wolves hit .126 on the night with primary setter,
Krista Schafer, receiving 23 assists. Outside hitter
Lauren Barlow led the Wolves attack with 12 kills. Right side
Morgan Doyle chipped in with nine kills.
Coach Schafer saw this game as one his team can learn from. "The match against New Hope was a good opportunity to figure out our strengths and weaknesses as a team," said Schafer. "The first set was a long drawn out set with a final score in the low 30's. I was proud of the battling my team did in the whole match. We fell short on our serving and passing, which will improve as the season progresses."
Walla Walla looks to turn the page and put their attention on its conference season. The Wolves will scrimmage before they open conference play on August 30
th at home versus Southern Oregon University.
