Wolves Fall to D3 Opponant Whitworth University

Spokane, Wash. – The Wolves traveled up north to Spokane for a matchup with the Pirates of Whitworth University. The Wolves (0-4, 0-0 CCC) and Pirates (1-3-1, 0-0 NWC) battled back and forth until the Pirates struck first in the 6th minute. The Pirates would use an aggressive first half that lead to their first win of the season, beating the Wolves 5-1.

The Wolves defense seemed to sputter in the opening minutes as the Pirates were able to take control of the ball and convert them into scoring opportunities. The Pirates would score two goals in the first 12 minutes of the game. After the Pirates scored two additional goals to put the Pirates up four, the Wolves would find the back of the net just before halftime off the leg of Carlos Cantu. The Wolves would go to the locker room down 4-1, as the Pirates had nine shot on goals compared to the Wolves three shots on goal.

Coming out of the half, the Wolves looked to regroup and control the ball better in the second half. The Wolves defense improved tremendously from the first half, as the Wolves allowed only one Pirates goal, which came in the 54th minute. The Wolves were able to shut down the Pirate attacks from that point on, however the Wolves were not be able to overcome their halftime deficit and would lose the match 5-1.

William Burns discussed after the game the improvement the team showed in the second half. "The guys did very well in the second half and held Whitworth to three shots on goal and our defense only allowed one goal," said Burns. "Our midfield really woke up after the half and played with some grit. Overall, with everything that happened today, guys did well and team morale is up."
