Women's Basketball Begins Season on Two-Game Road Trip to Oregon

Salem, Ore. – The Walla Walla women's basketball kicked off their 2019-20 season, traveling to NCAA D-3 opponents Linfield College and Willamette University over the weekend.

Game 1:
THE BASICS:
Final:  Linfield College 99, Walla Walla 69
Records:  Linfield College (1-0), Walla Walla (0-1)

 GAME NOTES:
  • The Wildcats raced out to a 15-6 lead midway through the opening quarter and used this early momentum to tale a 32-14 lead after one quarter.
  • After a Carolina Montes layup in the first possession of the second quarter cut the deficit to 16 points, the Wildcats went on a 9-0 to give them their largest lead of the game. The Wildcats went into the half with a 54-30 lead, dishing out 14 assists in the opening half.
  • Coming out of the half, the Wolves put together a nice run right off the bat, as Jaliyah Casem converted a 3-pointer and layup to cut the deficit to 17. This would be the closest the Wolves would get in the second half, as the Wildcats extended their lead to 30 midway through the fourth quarter.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Carolina Montes and newcomer Jaliyah Casem led the Wolves attack, recording 17 points apiece.
  • The Wolves forced the Wildcats into 20 turnovers, while only committing 9.
  • The Wildcats shot 54.4 percent from the field, while the Wolves shot 33.3 percent.
Game 2:
THE BASICS:
Final:  Willamette University 83, Walla Walla 55
Records:  Willamette University (1-2), Walla Walla (0-2)

 GAME NOTES:
  • The Wolves had a much better start in this game, as the visiting team was able to answer the Bearcats early and not allow themselves into an early hole. After a Kassin Hopkins 3-pointer gave the Bearcats their largest lead of the game at 17-9, the Wolves responded, however, with a quick 4-0 run. The teams battled back-and-forth for the remaining part of the quarter. The Wolves entered the second quarter trailing 22-17 after Isabella Robles converted a layup with seven seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
  • The Wolves hit two 3-pointers in the first two minutes but then fell victim to a long cold spell. The Wolves did not hit a field goal for the next seven minutes, as the home team built a 17-point lead. An Isabella Robles layup with 56 seconds remaining finally stopped the streak, however, the Bearcats answered right back with a Lucy Morrill jumper to take a 42-25 lead into the break.
  • The second half belonged to the Bearcats, as they built the lead to 26 points with a minute remaining in the third quarter before going onto an 83-55 win to pick up their first win of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Three Wolves recorded double-digit scoring, led by Carolina Montes and her game-high 18 points.
  • The Bearcats converted 17 points off 13 Wolves turnovers, while the Wolves only picked up 4 points off 13 Bearcat turnovers.
  • The Bearcats won the second chance battle, recording 16 points compared to 4 for the Wolves.
