Men’s Basketball Falls to Carroll College in Home Opener

College Place, Wash. – Walla Walla held their 2019-20 home opener Thursday evening, squaring off against Frontier opponent, Carroll College. A big defensive first half fueled the Saints to an 84-49 wire-to-wire victory.

Defense fueled the Saints to open the game, as the visiting team forced the Wolves to take multiple shots with the shot clock winding down while taking a 7-0 lead to begin the game. It was not until the 16:29 minute mark that Wolves' guard Javier Simpkins put the Wolves on the scoreboard, converting on a 15-foot mid-range jump shot.

As the media timeout hit, the Saints held a 17-7 advantage, using 10 paint points to build their lead. Coming out of the timeout, both teams picked up the defensive pressure, as each squad recorded scoring droughts. A Dennis Flowers III 3-pointer finally stopped the five-plus drought as the Saints continued their run, pushing the lead out to 22-7, forcing Walla Walla into a timeout.

Coming out of the timeout, the Saints continued their run, using transition opportunities to increase the lead to a 15-0 run and the lead to 30-7. The Wolves were able to finally break the Saints run, as forward Dylan Browning converted a layup with just over six minutes remaining in the half. Both teams played even basketball the rest of the half, as the Saints took a 43-21 halftime lead.

Turnovers would key the Saints first-half lead, as they forced the Wolves into 13 first-half turnovers, leading to 21 points. The Saints shot 50 percent from the field during the opening half while forcing the Wolves into 37 percent.

Despite the lead ballooning to 39 for the Saints in the second half, the Wolves continued battling; cutting the lead to 30 at 72-42 after Zayne converted a three-point play at the 6:13 mark. The clock, however, was not on the Wolves side and they ran out of time. The Saints went on to win their third game of the season with an 84-49 victory.

Carroll College was led by Dane Warp, who knocked down seven 3-pointers for a 25 point night. The Saints knocked 12 3-pointers and dished out 19 assists on the night.

Zayne Browning who recorded 13 points on the evening led Walla Walla. KiAndre Gaddy and Ethan Ford lead the Wolves in rebounding, grabbing seven apiece.

The Wolves will look ahead for a matchup with NCAA D-1 opponent, University of Idaho. Tipoff is scheduled for Saturday, November 23 at 7 p.m. inside Memorial Gym in Moscow, Idaho.
