Men's Soccer Starts 2019 Campaign Off Cruising to an 8-0 Victory Over CSU Maritime

Vallejo, Calif. – Walla Walla kicked off their 2019 campaign by traveling down to California to take on Cal Pac opponent CSU Maritime. By the time the second minute hit and junior Jordan St. George put the ball in the back of the net for the first score, the Wolves, playing in front of a well traveled group of fans, were just getting started on making history, totaling 8 goals on the day against a shorthanded Keelhaulers team.

Walla Walla set the tone early as captain Emmett Semple sent a textbook cross to Jordan St. George, who placed it beautifully outside the outstretched arms of the CSU Maritime goalie. 10 minutes passed before the Wolves struck again off the leg of freshman Bryson Johansson. From here, the Wolves continued their first half attack while scoring an additional goal to go into the half with a 3-0 lead.

The Wolves wasted no time in the second half as a lineup consisting of mostly reserves continued the first half momentum. Freshman Ben Wexler put his second goal in the back of the net seven minutes into the second half and the Wolves were well on their way to securing their most impressive victory since joining the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC).

The highlight of the match came in an eight minute stretch that saw the Wolves register a first-ever hat trick off the leg of freshman Bubacarr Manneh. He had picked up three goals in the 62nd, 67th, and 70th minutes. Of the 8 goals, 7 were scored by freshmen, including Mark Negleys magnificently placed ball just under the goalkeepers arms on the right side of the net.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
  • The 8 goals were the most the Wolves have scored since joining the CCC.
  • This was the first shutout for the Wolves since joining the CCC. The last shutout occured in 2014 in a 6-0 win against Multnomah.
  • The Wolves registered 19 shots on goal compared to 1 for CSU Maritime.
  • The Wolves recorded 5 assists, led by Carlos Cantu (2 assists).

NEXT GAME:
The Wolves look to carry their momentum over to Tuesday as they will take on head coach Williams Burns alma mater, Pacific Union College (PUC). The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Calistoga due to field concerns on PUC's soccer field.
