Wolves Lose Both Ends of Doubleheader

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. — Walla Walla Men's Volleyball wrapped up its four-game weekend with a pair of losses to Pacific Union College in non-conference games on Sunday.

The Pioneers (5-2) earned a 25-18, 25-19, 25-27, 25-16 victory in the first game of the day and then swept the Wolves (0-4) 25-21, 25-23, 25-14 in the second game.

Pacific Union College used long streaks of points in the first two sets in the opener to win the first two sets. Walla Walla made valiant efforts in both sets to make a late charge, but were held off both times. The Wolves did a much better job in the third set not allowing the visitors to gain full momentum and neither team were able to lead by more than three points.

Walla Walla survived one match point on a service error and won four of the final five points to extend the match to a fourth set.

The fourth set was a battle of runs. PUC jumped out to a 6-1 advantage before the Wolves rallied for four straight points. The Pioneers regained momentum and pushed their lead to 18-9 and never looked back for the victory.

In the second match, Walla Walla stood its ground for most of the opening set and looked to win the opening set for the third time over the weekend with a 20-18 lead. Pacific Union rallied for five straight points and seven of eight to steal the opening set.

The second set was a carbon copy of the first game as both teams were able to go on runs. The Wolves led 19-16 in an attempt to even the match, but it was the Pioneers strong attack that closed out the second set. PUC would take full control of the final set and jumped to a 15-4 lead and never let WWU back into striking distance.

Ethan Gaines had 18 total kills on the day for the Wolves. AJ Nacario earned an assist on 60 points and had 10 digs in each match. Angel Armenta led WWU with 17 digs in the opener and had five in the final game.

Nick Delucia led the Pioneers with 19 kills in the first match and Julian Clarke matched that total with 19 of his own in the finale. JV Cruzado had 42 assists in the first game and 62 total on the day.
