ASHLAND, Ore. — Walla Walla University women's volleyball nearly walked away with an upset victory over No. 18 Southern Oregon in its Cascade Conference opener Thursday.
The Wolves (0-3 overall) dropped the first two sets, as the Raiders used scoring runs in both sets to extend five-point leads and keep WWU at bay. The Wolves responded in the third and fourth sets, generating scoring runs of their own to even the game at two sets apiece.
In the fifth set, WWU continued its momentum, building a 14-10 lead. The Raiders didn't flinch, answering with a 7-1 run to avoid the upset and claim the five-set victory, 25-18, 25-18, 19-25, 18-25, 17-15.
Sahara Browning led the way for the Wolves, following up her record-setting performance from Wednesday with 23 kills, nine digs and four blocks. Olivia Cheek continued her hot start to the season with 26 assists and 14 digs, while Lauren Moody chipped in six kills and eight of the team's 13 blocks.
"We had four chances for the win but fell short," Head Coach Don Hepker said. "It was a disappointing loss, but I'm excited that we took the No. 18-ranked team in the nation to five sets and almost won. I'm excited to see what this team can do."
The Wolves return to action Friday, Sept. 4, against Oregon Tech. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
