Evergreen State College Uses Hot Start to Drop Wolves

Olympia, Wash. – The Lady Wolves began their Seattle weekend road trip with a visit to the Geoducks of Evergreen State College on Saturday night. The Wolves (0-12, 0-11 CCC) were hoping to pick up their first conference win while the Geoducks (10-11, 8-4 CCC) were hoping to move past a loss on Thursday night to Northwest University. For the Wolves, a step back in their passing would lead to a straight set victory for the Geoducks. (25-7, 25-9, 25-16)

In set one, the Wolves would find themselves in an early 4-0 deficit and could not recover. The Geoducks would put together multiple runs and end set one on a 7-0 run en route to a 25-7 victory over the Wolves.

Set two would see the Wolves match the Geoducks as Sarah Halversen notched four kills to pace the Wolves early on. The Geoducks would then go on an 11-1 run to push their lead over the Wolves, 17-7. The Wolves would not be able to recover and would drop set two, 25-9.

Down two sets to none, the Wolves would have their best start of any set. Morgan Doyle would pick up two kills as the Wolves would lead early on in set three, 5-3. The Geoducks would respond by going on a 5-0 run to claim the lead. The Wolves would match the Geoducks attack, trailing 18-15 and hoping to find a final run in the set to put them in a place to claim set three. However, the Geoducks would limit the Wolves to one point and close set three on a 7-1 run and drop the Wolves in straight sets. (25-7, 25-9, 25-16)

Head coach Scott Schafer spoke after the game about his teams efforts. "Tonight's match was several steps backward tonight after making some progress in our passing," said Schafer. "Evergreen losing to Northwest Christian last night really fired them up and they served tough and controlled the match from the beginning."

Sarah Halversen led the Wolves with seven kills and two blocks, while Krista Schafer notched nine assists, and Lauren Barlow posted eight digs.

By the Numbers
WWU 16 kills, ESC 35 kills
WWU 3 blocks, ESC 7 blocks

The Wolves look to rebound this afternoon in Kirkland, Wash. against Northwest University. The match is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 7.
