Wolves Drop First Match of Road Trip to Multnomah

Portland, Ore. – The Wolves traveled to Portland, Ore. for a Friday afternoon clash against the Lions of Multnomah University. For the Wolves, slow starts in sets one and two would be the difference, as the Wolves would fall to the Lions in straight sets (15-25, 22-25, 22-25). However, the Lady Wolves would post their best serve/receive statistics of the season.

"A lot of positive things about today's match," said head coach Scott Schafer. "We had our highest serve/receive of the season. Additionally, we posted our highest dig numbers and kill efficiency, which kept us in the match. Missed serves proved to be too much to overcome, but the team battled hard and competed well."

The Lady Wolves and Lions battled in the early stages of set one, however the Lions were able to string together a few runs and push their lead over the Wolves to three. With the score 8-11 in favor of the Lions, MU would go on a 7-0 run, a run the Wolves could not overcome, and would eventually fall 15-25 in set one.

Set two saw a similar start as set one. The Lady Wolves and Lions would trade points early in the set. With the score knotted at six, the Lions would go on a 6-1 run to push their lead to 12-7. The Lady Wolves would be down 20-9, however would not go down without a fight. Led by multiple team attacks and blocks, the Lady Wolves would ride a 13-4 run to put the score at 22-24, highlighted by kills from Sarah Halversen and Morgan Doyle. However, the Lions were able to get their 25th point off an Emma Walla kill and would claim set two, 25-22.

In set three the Lady Wolves would start off strong, building a 7-3 lead, highlighted by kills from Doyle and freshman Nyegai Koun. The Wolves were able to keep their lead at five, holding a 13-8 lead over the Lions. The Lions would go on a 7-2 run to knot the game up at 15 and the teams would continue going back and forth and tie the game up again at 20. From here, the Lions took advantage of opportunities and went on a quick 4-0 run and would eventually claim set three, 25-22.

The Lady Wolves were led by Halversen, who posted a season high in kills (11) and digs (11). In addition, the Wolves had Doyle and Lauren Barlow post seven kills apiece. Setters Krista Schafer and Ariel Sandau both contributed double digit assists with 17 and 11, respectively, with Sandau posting her season high.

The Wolves look to rebound quickly as they head east of the Willamette River to take on Warner Pacific in Portland, Ore. The match will take place Saturday, September 22 at 9:00PM on C.C. Perry Gym.
