Wolves Wrap Up Road Trip with Loss to Warner Pacific

Portland, Ore. – The Wolves wrapped up their short road trip on Saturday night, traveling to Warner Pacific University for a Saturday night matchup against the Knights. For the Wolves (0-9, 0-8 CCC), early struggles in serve/receive seemed to be the difference. Additionally, Warner Pacific out killed the Wolves with a 2.2:1 ratio in set one and two en route to a straight set victory over the Wolves. (25-15, 25-17, 25-23)

In set one, the Wolves would start off strong building a 7-4 lead over the Knights (3-10, 2-5 CCC). However, the Knights would respond with a run of their own and would knot up the set at nine. From this point on, the Knights would real off 11 consecutive points to put set one out of reach for the Wolves and would claim victory, 25-15.

The Wolves would respond in set two by matching points with the home team Knights, keeping the score knotted at six early on in the set. However, with the Wolves trailing by one, the Knights would put together a 7-1 run that would stretch their lead over the Wolves to six, pushing the score to 17-11. This would be the difference in set two as the Knights were able to hold off a Wolves comeback and would claim victory in the set, 25-17.

In set three the Lady Wolves would start off strong, building an 8-4 lead, as setter Krista Schafer would place perfect balls for her teammates to convert into points. However, the Knights would take advantage of Wolves errors and go on a 6-2 run to knot the set up at 10. From that point on the Wolves and Knights would go back and forth, knotting up the set at 17 and again at 21, highlighted by kills and blocks from various team members on both teams. Coming out of a Wolves timeout with the score knotted at 21, the Knights were able to find enough open space in the Wolves defense to score the needed four points for a set three victory, 25-23, and would claim the match in straight sets.

The Lady Wolves were led by Caldora Blackburn (.357 PCT and 6 kills) and Schafer (20 assists). Lauren Barlow and Sarah Halversen chipped in seven kills apiece.

Head coach Scott Schafer spoke after the match about his teams effort. "Despite our struggles in serve receive tonight we did some good things," said Schafer. "More extended rallies, six hitters with positive KE, and overall great team morale. We were able to find a lineup that we can develop going forward."

Up next for the Wolves will be a tough road matchup against No. 12 College of Idaho. The Lady Wolves will travel to Caldwell, Idaho and take on the Yotes on Friday, September 28 at 3:00PM.
