Wolves Fall to No. 10 Ranked Raiders in Second Matchup

Ashland, Ore. – The Wolves traveled down to Ashland, Ore. to face off against the No.10 ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon University on Thursday evening. This was the second matchup between the Wolves (0-4, 0-3 CCC) and Raiders (11-0, 4-0 CCC) within a week. Once again, the Raiders height was a huge factor in controlling the net, as the Raiders went on to win in straight sets (25-9, 25-11 and 25-7).

Unforced errors were the difference in set one, as the Wolves accumulated 10 attacking errors compared to the Raiders one in the first set. The Wolves would accumulate more attacks (25) than the Raiders (21), however the Wolves were unsuccessful converting those into more kills than the Raiders, with a deficit of 11-6 in that stat category for set one. With the score 14-7, in favor of the Raiders, the home team would go on a 9-0 run to put set one out of reach for the Wolves, eventually winning the opening set, 25-7.

Set two would follow a similar script to set one, as the Raiders built an early lead, scoring 16 of the first 20 points of the set, making the score 16-4. The Raiders were able to find open space in the Wolves defense, making it hard for the Wolves to take advantage of free balls. The Wolves would clean up their attack errors in set two, however the Raiders were able to win the battle of the net and would win set two, 25-11.

Coming out for set three, the Wolves looked to avoid putting themselves in an early hole like sets one and two, however the Raiders would convert seven of their first 10 points into kills, finding open spots in the Wolves defense. Unforced errors could not escape the Wolves in set three, as they accumulated 10, which would be the difference in the Raiders winning the deciding set, 25-7.

Scott Schafer spoke about facing a top level program after the game. "SOU executes all facets of the game at a high level," added Schafer. "Their athleticism and skill set made it difficult to maintain continuity. We needed to have a better serve/receive effort from our team tonight."

The Wolves will make a short turnaround, as they face the Owls of Oregon Tech tomorrow at 4:00PM on Danny Miles Court in Klamath Falls, Ore.
