Evergreen State College Drops Wolves on Senior Night

College Place, Wash.It was senior night here in College Place as the lady Wolves took on the Geoducks of Evergreen State University.  The atmosphere was vibrant within Windemuth Court, electric even, prior to the tip as the students prepared to give their seniors a proper send-off.

Both teams were dishing and swishing in the opening minutes.  It was Raegan Williams who created early and instant offense for the Wolves (2-26, 1-18 CCC), starting her night by draining two consecutive triples.  Turnovers became costly for the Wolves throughout the first quarter, however, as Evergreen's leading point-gal Alexcis Higginbotham harassed the Wolves ball carriers.

The Geoducks (1-22, 0-18) had built a solid eight-point lead by the end of the first quarter, and that lead quickly stretched to fourteen at 28-14 in the early stages of the second.  Evergreen's offense continued to percolate, propelled by senior forward Deidra Miller. Walla Walla was facing an 18-31 deficit with five minutes remaining until the half.  Titi Graham and Britnee Guerrero provided some relief for the Wolves in the final minute of the second with two consecutive triples, however the Wolves still trailed by a score of 24-41 heading into the break.

The Wolves came out hungry to begin the second half, getting good shots and looking rejuvenated on defense.  The Evergreen lead was sliced to thirteen before Geoducks' forward Merrily Jones buried a three to halt the Walla Walla run.  Midway through the third Carolina Montes got the crowd engaged with a strong move inside resulting in an and-one, and keeping the Wolves within striking distance at 34-49. Walla Walla continued to play neck and neck with the Geoducks but struggled to chip away at their looming deficit, which was nineteen after the third quarter buzzer at 39-58.

The Wolves burned out of the fourth quarter gates with a 7-0 fueled by paint-work from Titi Graham, and the offensive repertoire of Carolina Montes.  Midway through the fourth, Geoducks head coach Gil Rigell used his second timeout of the quarter after seeing his team's lead dwindle to just twelve at 49-61.  The Walla Walla comeback attempt contained fireworks, but ultimately came up short, as The Evergreen State College captured their first win of the season.

The Wolves will wrap up their season with a rematch against the Geoducks on Sunday, February 24 at 1:00 p.m.
