College Place, Wash. – Walla Walla women's basketball hosted Southern Oregon University Thursday evening. Playing shorthanded, the Wolves could not overcome the Raiders' offensive attack, as the Raiders (9-5, 5-2 CCC) shot 46-percent from the field and forced the Wolves (2-14, 0-7 CCC) into 22 turnovers to lead them to an 80-54 victory.
The Raiders held a seven-point lead after a back-and-forth opening period. The Raiders started the second period on an 11-0 run to extend their lead to its largest at 38-20 using a pestering full-court pressure, forcing the shorthanded Wolves to get out of their offensive rhythm.
Southern Oregon continued to push their lead, extending the lead to 22 with four-plus minutes left in the first half. The Wolves responded, however, chipping away for the remaining part of the half and ending the first half on an 8-0 to trail 46-32.
Both teams could not miss in the first half as the Wolves shot 51-percent from the floor in the first half, while the Raiders shot 58-percent. The Raiders used their bench to build the lead as they accounted for 17 first-half points.
Coming out of the half, the Wolves continued to chip away, cutting the Raiders lead to 11 at 46-35. With the full-court press still in effect, the Raiders responded with a 14-1 run as a Kenadee Honaker three-pointer gave the Raiders a 24-point lead. The Raiders took a 22-point lead heading into the final quarter and would add onto it as they held a 20-plus point lead for most of the final period.
The Wolves were led by the trio of
Jacqueline Saucedo (19 points & eight rebounds),
Isabella Robles (17 points and six rebounds), and
Jaliyah Casem (14 points & three rebounds).
Both teams are back in action tomorrow, squaring off for a second matchup on Windemuth Court. Tipoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
