Women's Basketball: Short-Handed Wolves Fall to Lions to Conclude 2021

COLLEGE PLACE, WASH. - Walla Walla continued their conference season, hosting the Lions of Multnomah University (MU) in the last game of the 2021 calendar year. Forward Alaygza Portis scored a career-high 34 points, as the Lions dropped the short-handed Wolves Friday afternoon, picking up their third conference win of the season.

 GAME NOTES:

  • The teams went back-and-forth in the opening period, with the Wolves taking a 14-11 lead after the first quarter.
  • With the score knotted at 17-17, the Lions went on a 6-2 run to reclaim the lead and added onto it, closing out the second quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 34-23 lead into the half.
  • The Wolves were able to cut the lead to single digits, as newcomer Jordan Green-Wallace, playing in her first game, knocked in a free throw to bring the Wolves within 40-35. The Wolves chipped away over the next five-plus minutes, eventually tying up the score after Paulina Quintana went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. The Lions knocked down back-to-back triples to end the third quarter, taking a 57-51 lead heading into the final quarter.
  • The Wolves cut the Lions lead to three on multiple occasions, but would not get closer. The Lions built their lead back to double-digits and secured the win.

 PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Alaygza Portis scored 18 of her career-high 34 points in the first half to lead the Lions, while also grabbing 12 boards for her fourth double-double of the season.
  • Five of the six players for the Wolves scored in double-digits, led by Carolina Montes-Estrada (16 points) and Clara Wiltgen (16 points).

NEXT GAME:
Walla Walla will host Warner Pacific University (WPU) on Tuesday, January 4 at 3 p.m. after the game was rescheduled from January 1 due to weather concerns.
