Women's Volleyball: Wolves Drop Five-Set Thriller Against Warner Pacific University

COLLEGE PLACE, WASH. – Walla Walla hosted the Knights of Warner Pacific University on Saturday night in front of a packed crowd at the Winter Educational Complex (WEC). In a battle of teams looking for their first conference win of the season, the Knights came out on top, coming back from a 2-1 set deficit and winning the match in five sets, 25-21, 23-25, 18-25, 25-17, 15-13. Despite the loss, the Wolves recorded some program records.

Meherio Krainer set the single-game match record in assists with 38 assists. The 38 assists are the most assists in the history the Wolves have been in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) and were five away from breaking the all-time record set back in 2009 by Torrey Haddad.

Gabrielle Browning set a new career-high in kills with 19. The 19 kills are also the most kills in the Wolves history in the CCC and the second most in their all-time history.

Wolves' libero Idalis Bedore set a career-high, registering 21 digs on the evening.

THE BASICS:
Final: Warner Pacific 3, Walla Walla 2
Records:  Warner Pacific (1-11, 1-8 CCC), Walla Walla (0-10, 0-9 CCC)

 GAME NOTES:
  • After squandering a chance to tie up the match at 1-1 yesterday against Multnomah, the Wolves were able to close set two with a pivotal 3-0 run and avoid going into a 2-0 set hole.
  • The Wolves played their best two sets of the season in sets two and three after dropping the opening set to the Knights. The Wolves were able to find that close-out run to capture the set, closing set two on a 3-0 run to claim the set and a 7-0 run in set three to win set three and take a 2-1 match lead.
  • The Wolves would come out flat in set four, as the Knights built a 12-5 lead and held on for a 25-17 set win to tie up the match 2-2.
  • In an entertaining and back-and-forth set five, the Wolves found themselves up 13-11 after a Jocelyn Curiel-Ruiz kill, but the Wolves could not get off 13 and the Knights ended the set on a 4-0 run to claim the fifth set and win the match, 3-2.
