COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. — Walla Walla University opened up their conference play Thursday night against Evergreen State College. In this overtime thriller, The Evergreen State Geoducks took the win against the Walla Walla Wolves, 80-76.
How It Happened:
The game started out with Walla Walla's Jaliyah Casem making a three from the corner thanks to an assist from Natalee Trevino. Freshman guard Maren Jones added to the score with another three followed by Jaliyah Casem's second three of the first quarter. This momentum carried the Wolves throughout the first half, allowing them an eight point lead, 33-25 to go into the second half.
The second half was not in the Wolves' favor as their lead slowly disappeared and the Geoducks came back to eventually take the win. This change took place towards the middle of the third quarter, where Jenna Glenzel, and Jalyn Sackrider scored two layups each, closing the eight-point gap to a one-point gap making the score 37-38. The one-point battle continued from the end of the third quarter to the last seconds of the fourth quarter, where the Geoducks had the one-point advantage but a foul by Abby Mundy on Jaliyah Casem allowed the Wolves to tie the game 64-64, sending it into overtime.
In overtime, what was once a tie game quickly became a five-point game as Evergreen took the lead. However the Wolves were not going to let this go easy, with a made layup by Natalle Trevino, and a made three pointer from Jaliyah Casem, the win was only one point away from the Wolves reach. Yet a foul by Natalee Trevino on Jenna Glenzel allowed the Geoducks to get it back to a three point game. Jaliyah Casem tried to get it back to a one-point difference but her layup did not fall as it usually does. With a last ditch effort, Clara Campos Wiltgen fouled Honey Padasdao, where she made one of her two free throws, creating a four-point gap, and granting the Geoducks the win.
