PORTLAND, Ore. — Senior
Chariah Daniels set a Wolves record for career rebounds, but the Walla Walla Women's Basketball team fell to Cascade Conference opponent Warner Pacific 66-56 at Bart Valentine Court on Friday.
Daniels had 12 points and 11 rebounds (all on the defensive side) to record her 36th double-double in her career. The senior's rebound with a minute to go in the game moved the Wichita, Kan. native past Lauren Pernu atop the all-time standings. Pernu played for the Wolves from 2012-16 and had 653 rebounds in her career. Daniels and Pernu stand alone at the top of the Walla Walla leaderboard with a large gap to Morgan Stanyer who is in third with 352 boards.
Freshman
Jaylo Bello connected on five 3-pointers in the game and finished with a team-high 21 points. It was the third time that the freshman topped 20 points in a contest this season and the first time since Nov. 23.Â
Walla Walla forced 23 turnovers and had 13 steals in the game. Daniels led the way with five,
Jordan Green-Wallace had three and
Mireyah Lopez added two.
The loss dropped the Wolves record to 3-10 overall and 0-7 in CCC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Warner Pacific jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Bello got Walla Walla on the board with a 3-pointer with 7:25 remaining in the first quarter.
Sidney Folkenberg made a basket inside the paint to cut the lead to four. Daniels, Lopez, Green-Wallace and
Lora Moulder made baskets for WWU in the first. The Knights had a 23-13 lead after the opening quarter.
Bello hit a pair of 3s early in the second and Green Wallace made a layup to cut the lead to eight. WPU did not make a basket in the final four minutes, but hit six free throws and extended the lead to 12 at halftime.
Walla Walla worked the ball inside in the third quarter. Folkenberg, Daniels and Trevino all hit layups, but the Wolves could not find a way to cut into the Knights lead. Daniels made a free throw and another layup, Green-Wallace and Bello added buckets for Walla Walla in the third.
Warner Pacific led by as much as 19 points in the fourth quarter, but the Wolves did not go away quietly. Lopez and Bello had 3-pointers, Green-Wallace scored inside and Daniels added a free throw and a layup as the WWU went on a 13-0 run. Walla Walla cut the lead to six with 1:23 remaining. Daniels pulled in the record-breaking rebound and Bello added another 3-pointer before the end of the contest.
