Vaughan becomes Wolves’ all-time leading scorer in loss to Southern Oregon

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Senior Andrew Vaughan continued to rewrite the Walla Walla Men's Basketball record book when he passed Tristan Greenidge for the most career points in Wolves history. However, it was Southern Oregon that came out victorious in the Cascade Conference affair with a 108-98 win at Windemuth Court on Friday.

The loss was the third in a row for the Wolves and dropped their record to 4-19 overall and 3-16 in conference play.

It only took Vaughan three minutes and three seconds to get the three points he needed to pass Greenidge. After an earlier layup, Vaughn lined up a 3-pointer off a pass from Almonds Sebirokwa to obtain the record. The senior finished with 30 points on 12-of-17 shooting and added five steals and five assists.

"The accomplishments keep racking up," Walla Walla coach Brandon Broome said. "Seeing the fruits of your labor is a wonderful thing. Very proud to be a part of his journey."

Soren Dalan led the Wolves with 31 points on 14-of-18 shooting and had six rebounds. Thomas Mestrov added eight points, nine assists and five boards.

Walla Walla shot the lights out in the second half as the team made 24-of-35 (68.6%) of its attempts. The Wolves had 60 points in the paint and recorded 10 steals. The 98-point performance by WWU was its best since scoring 120 against Evergreen State on Jan. 21, 2023.

Southern Oregon improved to 17-7 overall and 12-6 in CCC action with its fifth consecutive victory.

The Raiders made 13 3-pointers and outrebounded the Wolves 41-28. Southern Oregon had 21 points off turnovers and 25 second chance points in the win. Elijah Jackson had 30 points to lead the Raiders on 10-of-12 shooting. Joe Juhala added 25 points, Jacob Axmaker added 16 points in 13 minutes and Bryce Dyer had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

When Vaughan broke the school record it tied the game at nine early on. SOU then went on a 19-2 run over the next six minutes. Dalan ended the run with a layup inside. The Wolves started to cut into the lead with a jumper by Kekoa Beard, a layup by Dalan and a 3-pointer by JT Fenz.

After a 3 by Axmaker pushed the lead back up to 16, it was Fenz with a jumper and Beard from beyond the arc for WWU. Vaughan cut the lead to single digits with a 3 and Dalan added a free throw. A minute and a half later it was Mestrov with a 3-pointer to cut the Raider lead to five with 3:51 to go in the half. The two teams traded buckets the rest of the first half with Sebirokwa coring inside to make it a two point game, but a 7-2 run for Southern Oregon gave the Raiders a 54-47 lead at the break.

SOU pushed the lead to early in the second half with a 3-pointer by Jackson. Two Dalan layups sandwiched a free throw by Sebirowka cut the Raider lead in half. The two offenses ran up the scoreboard with Juhala making a basket inside to push the SOU lead to eight with 10:14 to go. Then the Wolves applied the pressure.

Mestrov brought down a defensive rebound and quickly got it to Fenz for a fastbreak layup. On the ensuing possession Vaughan stole the ball and took it the other way for a dunk and followed it up with another steal and closed it out with a layup to make it an 81-79 game in favor of Southern Oregon. The Raiders regained control and pushed the lead to 12 with 3:33 and the Wolves were unable to get within eight the rest of the way.
