WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Max Pena was 2-under for the first 14 holes and finished even-par for the Walla Walla Men's Golf team and finished the day in second place after the first round of the Walla Walla Invitational at the Wine Valley Golf Club on Sunday.

Pena birdied back-to-back holes on Nos. 15 and 16 and stayed out of trouble all day long until No. 6. The junior is two strokes behind leader Jesus Castaneda of Columbia Basin. Castaneda had five birdies in his opening round for a 2-under 70.

Andrew Kuljis bounced back after a double-bogey on No. 12 with three birdies on the day. The senior is tied for fourth place after a 75. George Calvet played as an individual in the tournament and an eagle on No. 3 helped him card a 76. Calvet closed out the day in a tie for sixth place.

The Walla Walla men are currently in second place in the three team field with a team round of 311. Columbia Basin is 21 strokes ahead.

Mariana Posada had three birdies on the day, but a triple bogey on the final hole of the day (No. 9) dropped the freshman down to third on the leaderboard with a 6-over 78. Nell Dodds started her round off strong with four pars in the first five holes and finished the day in fifth place with a round of 86.

The WWU women are in first place by four strokes over Columbia Basin in a two-team tournament.
