First Conference Win for the WWU Women

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. — The Walla Walla Women's Basketball team earned its first Cascade Conference victory of the season with a 69-55 victory against Evergreen State on Friday afternoon.

The Wolves improved to 3-12 overall and 1-8 in conference play. The Geoducks dropped to 0-12 on the season and 0-9 in CCC action.

"I'm incredibly proud of the team and the way they showed up for one another tonight," Walla Walla coach Makana Stone said. "We've faced some adversity with illness and injury, and the response was outstanding. They stayed together and trusted the process."

Jaylo Bello and Allison Haslam combined for 45 of the 69 points put up by Walla Walla. Bello had 25 points, seven rebounds and three steals. The sophomore surpassed 600 career points as a member of the Wolves, the seventh player in WWU history to reach that milestone.

Haslam had a career-high 20 points and added seven boards. Sidney Folkenberg brought in 11 rebounds (surpassing 250 in her career) and recorded six steals. Danea Norman saw her first playing time since November and had two points and four boards in eight minutes.

"Our execution on the offensive end was strong, and players stepped into their roles with confidence and composure," Stone said. "This group continues to grow, and tonight was a powerful reflection of their resilience and belief in each other."

The Wolves made four 3-pointers in the opening quarter to take a small four point lead. The WWU defense played well throughout and kept Evergreen State from recording a successful 3 until the third quarter and held the Geoducks to 2-of-24 shooting from beyond the arc. A strong 8-of-11 shooting performance by Walla Walla in the fourth quarter helped close the door on the victory.

Jenna Glenzel led TESC with 14 points. Bayleigh Harder and Amaya Afatasi added 13 points each. Harder led the Geoducks with nine rebounds and Afatasi recorded five assists.
