The University of Great Falls Argos (8-7, 7-5) had a lot on the line today and they came out swinging hard against the Wolves. This weekend wraps up Cascade Conference play for men's soccer and the Argos want to keep their spot as the 6
th seed heading into playoffs. Even though the Wolves have been showing improvement over the last couple of weeks, they knew that a long road trip to Montana this weekend combined with the Argos playing for playoff position would make for a tough challenge.
In the eighth minute of the match, UGF's Adrian Gomez put back a deflection after a stop by
Josh Fry that the Wolves could not lock up. The Argos did not waist much time as just a few seconds later, George Holloway score the second goal of the match off a pass from teammate Camilo Martinez. Holloway flicked the ball up and over goalkeeper Fry. Before the end of the first half, the Argos had accumulated over 20 shots, and scored a total of 6 goals. Adrian Gomez would finish with two goals in the first half.
In the second half, the pace of play slowed down a bit for both teams. In the 58
th minute of the match, Luis Macias scored an unassisted goal for the Argos on a shot from the right side just a few yards out. In the 76
th minute, UGF was awarded penalty kick. John Martindale took the kick for the Argos, and scored his first goal of the season. That would be the final goal of the match, as Great Falls won 8-0 over the Wolves. Goalkeeper
Josh Fry recorded 10 saves on the day. For the Argos, Tom
Chesterman and Henrik Sohn split time at keeper, and combined they recorded a shutout on the day.
The Wolves have tomorrow off, before heading down to Helena, Montana to take on the Fighting Saints of Carroll College on Sunday.
