Paul Starkebaum, Sports Information Director

College Place, Wash.- Every year during the first weekend in October the Walla Walla University campus is flooded with hundreds of high school athletes as they come to participate in the Fall Classic.  Walla Walla University's Marketing and Enrollment Department organizes both soccer and volleyball tournaments for Adventist academies around the country.  This year, over 700 athletes and coaches will be participating in the tournament.  It is a great experience for the student athletes that get to be involved, and is one of the most special times of year here on the Walla Walla University Campus.

Last weekend, the Wolves took on third place Northwest University and ninth place The Evergreen State College.  While the Wolves lost both matches, they competed well, at points, in both.  Sunday afternoon, Walla Walla took the third set of the match from Evergreen and the Wolves are showing signs of improvement in their passing and defense.  So far, the Wolves stat leaders include Lauren Barlow with 79 kills, Nilah Mata'afa with 153 assists, and Emily Allen with 29 total blocks on the season.

The volleyball team is here on campus this week, and Friday the varsity team can expect a big crowd at the game as they will be playing after the high school tournament has finished for the day.  They take on the Knights of Warner Pacific College (6-6, 5-5), who are currently in sixth place in the Cascade Conference.  The Knights have been a very efficient hitting team, ranking third in the conference with a .207 hitting percentage, and average almost four kills per set.   Janessa White sits in fifth place in the league in hitting percentage with a .306 on the season.  They are also leading the league in aces per set, at almost two. The Wolves will need to take advantage of the Knights on their side of the net, as WPC has given up a high percentage of kills this season, and is just 10th in the league in digs.  The Wolves will need to be on the lookout for M'Kailah Redden who patrols the net for the Knights, averaging exactly one block per set this season.

Saturday night, the Wolves will be hosting the Multnomah University Lions (6-11, 1-9), who sit in 10th place in the Cascade Conference.  The Wolves will need to work around the defense of Multnomah, who has the fourth best defensive hitting percentage in the CCC.  They allow a stingy .173 on the season and are third place in digs with almost 16 per set.  Miranda Halverson leads with 171 kills on the season and Marissa Rhodes sits in 10th place in the conference with 299 assists so far.

Wolves soccer took some big steps forward this last weekend, taking on Northwest University and The Evergreen State College.  While Walla Walla is still struggling to get their offense rolling, there has been significant improvement on both ends of the field for the Wolves. Goalkeeper Josh Fry is leading the Cascade Conference with over 15 saves per game, and is second in total saves on the season with 62 so far.  They allowed a season low for goals on Friday, and then lowered that total again on Sunday at Evergreen.  Walla Walla also had several good opportunities to score this last weekend, and Coach Burns was very upbeat about where the team is heading.

Warner Pacific College (1-6-2, 0-4-2) sits in 12th place in the Cascade Conference currently, giving Walla Walla a break from the top half of the conference that they have been facing over the last couple of weeks.  Similar to the Wolves, the Knights have struggled on offense, averaging just over eight shots per game.  Manny Guillermo is the goalkeeper for the Knights and leads the conference with 73 saves on the season.  Aaron Martinez and Martin Chinn currently lead the Wolves in shots and they will be looking to generate some offense on Saturday against WPC.

The Wolves make the trip from Portland across the state to La Grande for a Sunday afternoon match with Eastern Oregon University (6-5-1, 1-5-1).  EOU is one spot above Warner Pacific in the standings at 11th place.  Eastern has a three game losing streak going into this weekend, but the Wolves will have their hands full stopping the Mountaineers aggressive offense.  Eastern averages the second most shots in the CCC, with almost 20 attempts per game, and has scored 23 goals so far this season.  Tyler Hoiem leads the Mountaineers with six goals on the season, including two game winning goals.  Goalkeeper Alfredo Lara has 31 saves on the season and is averaging around three stops per game.

Men's and Women's Golf
  • Walla Walla University Invite
    • October 10 & 11- All Day
    • Location: Wine Valley Golf Course
This Monday and Tuesday, Walla Walla will host its first ever Cascade Conference golf tournament.  The Wolves are excited to be hosting the event at Wine Valley Golf Course.  Our players have been practicing at Wine Valley several times a week this season, and should be well prepared for the challenges the links style golf course offers.  The entire field of golf teams will be in Walla Walla starting Sunday to prepare for the tournament.
Corban University and Oregon Tech have been leaders this season in both men's and women's golf.  Corban men are currently averaging 292 strokes as a team, per round, so far this season, and Oregon Tech is right behind them at 295.  The Walla Walla men have been averaging 344 strokes per round so far, but are looking to shave that down quite a bit at their home course.  Chase Yoshida has averaged 76.8 strokes per round so far this season and is leading the Wolves.  Behind him is senior and first year golf team member Jordan Collins who's averaged 83 strokes per round and shot a career best of 79 two weeks ago at Glendoveer Golf Course at a tournament hosted by Warner Pacific.

The golf team would love to see you out on the course this weekend. If you have the chance to come out to Wine Valley on Monday or Tuesday, please do so!
