Box Score Paul Starkebaum, Sports Information Director

Salem, Ore. – The unbeaten Willamette University Bearcats (5-0) let shots go early and often from the outside tonight. Despite a spirited effort, the Wolves could not keep pace with the quick shooting Bearcats.  Willamette shot 48% from deep tonight and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds, a combination that is hard to beat.  Walla Walla bounced back nicely from their tough loss last night and competed hard all game.  Three Wolves finished in double figures and the team showed improvement each quarter, only losing the last by a margin of five points, in an 88-56 loss to the Bearcats.

Willamette jumped out early on the Wolves and included two three-pointers as part of a 9-0 run to open the game.  A lay-up by Morgan Stanyer was the first two points of the game for Walla Walla.  From there both teams missed their fair share of shots in the opener, but strong offensive rebounding helped the Bearcats early, with several put backs in the first quarter that really helped grow the point spread.  Sarah Heinly then hit a three late in the quarter to give Willamette an 18-7 advantage.

To open the second quarter the Bearcats would open with a 6-0 run, broken up by an Emily Downs jumper for two.  The lead for Willamette would grow to 19 midway through the quarter but from there the Wolves picked themselves up and began to compete.  Over the last five minutes both teams would score seven points, and with 29 seconds in the quarter a lay-up by Sierra Briggs would make the halftime score 25-44.

Sierra opened the scoring up in the 3rd with a rebound and a put back, and a few minutes later Lexi Ehlers hit a three-pointer off an assist by Alyssa Blankenship to cut the lead to 15.  Kylie Towry came back and hit a three for Willamette and started the Bearcats on a 16-4 run to open the gap back up and put them in control of the game heading into the fourth quarter.

Walla Walla made a small push early in the quarter, and an Alyssa Blankenship three-point field goal cut the score to 75-50 in favor of the Bearcats, but that is as close as they would get.  Alyssa led the Wolves in scoring with 22 points and 3 assists.  Morgan Stanyer finished with 11 points and 5 rebounds, and Lexi Ehlers rounded off the double digit scorers with 10 points.  Emily Downs and Sierra Briggs tied for leading rebounders on the night with 8 apiece.  Bearcats guard Sarah

Heinly lead all scorers with 23 on the night, including 5 three-point field goals.  Kylie Towry contributed 20 points as well and Celine Gregoire finished with an 11 point, 11 rebound effort.

The Wolves have the week off, and play next on Sunday, December 4, at home, against the Pacific University JV squad.
