Women’s Basketball: Wolves Struggle with Strong inside Presence of Geoducks

Olympia, Wash. –Wolves were in Olympia, Wash. on Sunday afternoon to take on The Evergreen State College (5-19, 4-13).  Walla Walla (2-22, 0-18) was coming off a back-to-back, as they played against Northwest University last night.  The Wolves struggled to contain the inside presence of the Geoducks, as they lost 68-102 to Evergreen.
 
By the Numbers
  • Three players for Walla Walla hit double figures in scoring, led by Alyssa Blankenship with 19 points
  • Sierra Briggs lead the Wolves in rebounding (7) and assists (3)
  • Gabi Fenumiai lead all scorers with 34 points on 15-22 shooting for the Geoducks
  • Evergreen scored a total of 68 points in the paint compared to Walla Walla's 22
 
How it Happened

Autumn Moorcroft grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed three-pointer and put the ball in, scoring the first two for the Geoducks.  Walla Walla's Alyssa Blankenship made a layup a couple of minutes into the game to put the Wolves on the board down 8-2.  The Wolves struggle on the boards and in the paint.  Walla Walla was not shooting well early, and combined with the Geoducks have success in the paint lead to the Geoducks going up 26 to 9 after the first period.  The Wolves opened the second quarter by going on a 6-0 run including two lay-ups by Sierra Briggs.  The Geoducks responded by going on a 19-6 run over the next 5 minutes.  The Wolves refused to go away during the second and third quarters.  Excluding the first quarter, the Wolves shot 44% from the field and had three players reach double figures today.  The inside presents of Evergreen gave them a clear advantage throughout the game. Together, Autumn Moorcroft and Gabi Fenumiai, combined for 60 points and 21 rebounds.  Walla Walla was not able to get back into the game in the second half and lost 68-102 to Evergreen.

The Wolves are on the road for the last two games of the regular season games of the year.  Walla Walla will be in Caldwell, Idaho to take on the College of Idaho, Saturday night February 18.
