Vaughan moves to third in WWU total points in loss to Warner Pacific

PORTLAND, Ore. — Andrew Vaughan moved to third all-time on the all-time Walla Walla Men's Basketball scoring leader board, but the Wolves dropped a back-and-forth contest to Warner Pacific 83-79 in a Cascade Conference game at Bart Valentine Court.

Vaughan hit a 3-pointer just under six minutes into the game for his eighth point to pass KiAndre Gaddy (1,071) for third all-time. The senior finished with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting and is now at 1,087 total points. Next on the leader board is Zayne Browning at 1,093.

Andrew Sebirokwa had a season-high 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting and brought down seven rebounds. Sophomore Soren Dalan recorded his 13th double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

There were 13 lead changes and the score was tied 14 times and neither team had a double-digit point lead throughout the game. Both teams had 43 rebounds and both teams caused 10 turnovers.

"We're definitely sour after that loss, no way around it," Walla Walla coach Brandon Broome said. "Very proud of our effort and commitment to executing the game plan. We'll keep getting better and and fighting for victories. Great, great effort."

The Wolves held the Knights to 42.3% (30-of-71) shooting in the game. Walla Walla hit seven 3-pointers and had five steals.

Walla Walla is now 2-9 overall and 1-6 in CCC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sebirokwa got the scoring started with a layup on the opening possession for the Wolves. Warner Pacific answered with a pair of baskets. Dalan scored inside and Sebirokwa added a free throw and a shot inside.

The Knights went on a mini 6-2 run and took a four point lead before Vaughan took over. The senior had a jumper and two 3-pointers on a personal 8-3 run. WWU had its largest lead of the game at four with 14:12 remaining in the first half.

Dalan made a pair of free throws. WPU went on an 8-0 run. Sebirokwa broke up the run with a layup. Matt Solomon and Jurrien Sparks hit 3s for the Knights to give them the largest lead of the game at nine.

Dillon Wasser made his first basket of the game to spark a 9-0 Wolves run. The two teams traded baskets late in the first half and Dalan made a layup late and the two teams headed to the locker room tied at 40.

Warner Pacific got the scoring started with a 3-pointer and a layup by Sparks. Dalan answered with two layups for WWU. Sebirokwa connected on a jumper four minutes into the second half to tie the game 50-50.

The Knights pulled away to a seven-point lead, but the Wolves answered right back. Vaughn completed an old-fashioned three-point play, Sebirokwa hit a pair of layups and Josue Mireles made a pair of free throws. Walla Walla held Warner Pacific scoreless for over five minutes and led 60-58 with 9:30 to go in the game.

The two teams traded buckets until Dalan scored inside for WWU and the Wolves had a four-point lead with 3:26 to go. Solomon hit a 3-of-4 free throws for WPU, Dalan made a layup for Walla Walla and Sean Johnson hit from beyond the arc for the Knights to tie the game.

Sebirokwa hit 1-of-2 free throws with 1:49 to go for the Wolves. Solomon hit both free throws for Warner Pacific 35 seconds later and gave the Knights a one-point lead with 1:14 to go. Johnson hit a dagger 3-pointer with 24 seconds to go.

UP NEXT

Walla Walla closes out the road trip in Portland, Ore. with a meeting with the Lions of Multnomah at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
