Late rally falls short for Wolves

SALEM, Ore. — After the Wolves dropped the first two sets, they rallied back to win the third and had a lead late in the fourth before No. 4 Corban closed out the Cascade Conference match on Friday.

The Warriors (13-3, 7-2) won by set scores of 26-24, 25-15, 22-25 and 25-22. Walla Walla dropped to 7-5 overall and 5-4 in CCC play with the loss.

Yaimaris Garcia (14 kills and 23 assists) and Paula Flores (13 kills and 16 digs) both recorded double-doubles for WWU. Sahara Browning added 10 kills, Olivia Cheek had 18 assists and Deshy Sandoval finished with 12 digs.

The first set was a great back-and-forth battle as the Wolves continued to eliminate small Corban leads. Garcia put away a kill, Flores followed with one of her own and Garcia slammed home an ace to tie the set 23-23. After a service error by Garcia it was Flores again who tied the set. However, the Warriors were able to win the next two points to take the opening set.

It was all Corban in the second set as the home team jumped out to an 11-3 gap. WWU was unable to find a groove and the fourth-ranked Warriors rolled to a two set to none lead.

Corban scored four of the first five points in the third set before Walla Walla was able to get things going. Jimenez spiked one away to spark a 6-1 rally concluded by a kill by Flores and the visitors led 10-7. The Warriors again showed why they are one of the top teams in the country with six straight points to flip the advantage.

The two CCC opponents found themselves tied at 20-20 before a service error gave the lead to Walla Walla. Lauren Moody earned a kill and an attack error by Corban pushed the WWU lead to three late. Four points later it was Garcia off an assist by Cheek to keep the Wolves in the match with a third set victory.

Walla Walla sped out to a 7-4 lead in the fourth set as the Wolves tried to push the match to a fifth and deciding set. The Warriors rallied to win four of the next five points and jumped back in front. Neither team was able to lead by more than two points until the final point of the match.

Garcia took another pass from Cheek and put it on the hardwood and Walla Walla led 21-20. The Warriors won three straight points and a kill by Emma Bischoff set up match point before Abby Guindy landed an ace to close it out for the home team.

Makayla Roginski and Bischoff had 10 kills each for Corban. Guindy had 21 assists and Kaile'a Ontai finished with 16 digs.
