Wolves Fall in Cross Town Match At Whitman College

8/29/2018 10:43:00 AM

Walla Walla, Wash. – The Wolves traveled across town for a cross town matchup against the Blues of Whitman College on Tuesday Evening at Whitman Athletic Fields. The Wolves started off this match better than their previous match, but the Blues eventually took advantage of their opportunities and pushed through the Wolves defense, beating them, 10-1.

The Wolves defense bent in the first 14 minutes of the match, but did not break, as the Blues would put together 14 total shots, but were not successful finding the back of the net. The Wolves defense eventually broke after the Blues took advantage off a free kick, scoring the first goal of the match in the 15th minute.

The Wolves would find an equalizer goal, as Emmett Semple took a bad pass from a Blues defender and maneuvered his way past their goalie, scoring in the 17th minute, making the score 1-1.

Whitman would go on to score three more goals before halftime, making the score 4-1.

Coach Burns discussed the importance of pressure at halftime, making a note to mark their players for the whole possession and to keep competing as a team. "We need to move on, play, and just solve it on the field," Burns said to his team. "We can get better in this second half, but we have to do it together."

The Blues were able to continue their pressure early in the second half and would score six goals, making the final, 10-1.

After the game Burns discussed his approach to this game and what his approach to the preseason games have been. "With this being our third official game, I wanted to nail down some starters," said Burns. "The starters played almost the whole first half and I wanted to see what we could do [on the field] and I was very happy. We had a goal of scoring first or second and we obtained that goal tonight, so I was very pleased with the way we responded to that. These are important lessons that we can learn from and use for our upcoming conference season."

The Wolves will travel to Spokane, Wash. to take on Whitworth University on Friday, September 7.
