Men's Basketball: Zayne Browning Ends Career with Poetic Finish in Win Over Southern Oregon

KiAndre Gaddy Secures Cascade Collegiate Conference Scoring Title

COLLEGE PLACE, WASH. - Senior Zayne Browning scored 13 points and knocked down two clutch free throws with 15 seconds and Walla Walla locked down Southern Oregon on the games final possession to conclude the poetic win for the Wolves and Browning's career. The Wolves displayed tremendous defense throughout, holding the Raider's top three scores to a combined 12-for-45 for 26-percent on the game. Forward KiAndre Gaddy concluded his impressive season, securing the Cascade Collegiate Conference scoring title, averaging 20.3 points on the season.

"Incredible finish to the season and career for Zayne," said head coach Brandon Broome. "It's bittersweet because we did not reach our goal of postseason play but we have this high note to put a bow on an unforgettable season. We have a lot of work to do and I cannot wait to see what all the hard work yields next season. Go Wolves!"

"I'm so proud to be a part of this team," said Browning. "We have been through so much together, and things did not go how we wanted all year long, but we stuck together. Everyone showed so much heart in our last game and I could not have asked for a better final game."

 GAME NOTES:

  • After a devastating loss the previous game, Walla Walla quickly flipped the script and opened this game strong from the opening tip, as back-to-back Caleb Golden jumpers gave the Wolves a 16-7 lead six minutes into the game.
  • The Wolves pushed their lead out to double-digits, but Southern Oregon quickly answered, as an Atmar Mundu layup cut the deficit to 25-23 with eight minutes left and the Raiders eventually took the lead, pushing the Wolves into a 10 point deficit at the two-minute mark. The Wolves chipped away at the Raiders lead, trailing 41-35 going into the halftime break.
  • The Wolves quickly got back in the game, scoring on their first four possessions to open the second half and tie it up at 43-43.
  • The teams went back-and-forth before the Raiders went on an 8-3 run to find some breathing room and push their lead to its largest at 69-62 at the four-minute mark.
  • The Wolves were not done yet, as KiAndre Gaddy knocked down his lone 3-pointer of the game to cap off an 8-2 run to bring the Wolves within a point at 71-70 with just under a minute remaining.
  • On the next possession the Raiders came down the court and a Mundu jumper came up short and Gaddy secured the rebound and the Wolves took their final timeout. Coming out of the timeout the Wolves put the ball in the hands of senior Zayne Browning, as he attacked and drew a foul, sending him to the line with 15 seconds left where he calmly knocked down both free throws to give the Wolves the 72-71 lead.
  • The Raiders quickly inbounded the ball and got up the court, as the Wolves found themselves in the same situation as the previous game, with a lead and having to play one final defensive possession to secure the win.
  • The Raiders swung the ball, as Mundu drove baseline and found K'wan Carter for a mid-range jumper, but his shot came up short as the final buzzer sounded and the Wolves secured the victory, making sure lightening did not strike twice on their home court.
