Forty minutes wasn't enough to decide a winner Monday evening. An overtime finish by the Walla Walla University Wolves helped seal their first victory of the 2014-15 season as they finished with a win over visiting Multnomah University (Portland, Ore.) 75-70.
Spencer Woodworth, and Ethan Osias hit a pair of treys to help get the Wolves out to an early lead. From there, solid defense was enough to hold the upper hand early, as Multnomah struggled to convert on any of their offensive possessions.
The Wolves would take a 33-25 lead into the half, but opened the second half with a little bit of a defensive letdown as Steven Sansone, and Blake Updike each hit several shots from long range. This surge by Multnomah was enough to put them ahead momentarily.
It wouldn't last long, as Osias came back and tied it at 56, scoring two of his team-high 21 points. A Luke Spady three put the Wolves ahead in the final seconds. However, Multnomah would draw up a play out of a timeout with the ball going to their big man Jon Viles in the post. Viles worked and was able to score and tie the game at 64 with 4.8 seconds left on the clock.
Walla Walla was unable to convert on an Osias baseline jump shot as regulation expired, sending the game into overtime, 64-64. In the overtime period, Jordan Underwood, and Luke Spady each hit from downtown to help secure a 75-70 victory.
Luke Spady added 19 points and two blocks, while reserves Josh Hough and Joey Inman played crucial roles in the win. Hough finished with 12 points, four blocks, and nine rebounds, while Inman added nine rebounds of his own.
Wolves Head Coach, Jimmy Hill said afterwards, "I'm really happy with the guys, there are some moments we can work on, some lessons we can take to get better, but overall really happy."
The Wolves had lost their first 15 games of the season, so to finally come away with a win, in their first game of the New Year was a big moment for the team.
Speaking individually of his players, Hill said, "Josh Hough came up with some great plays in the second half. We got a big rebounding effort by Joey (Inman), and Luke came through in overtime."
Hill added, "We won a game here where we didn't play our best, but we found a way to win it."
Looking ahead for Walla Walla, they are set to take on Eastern Oregon University this Saturday, in College Place at 7 p.m.
