Wolves Fight Missionaries to the End

Box Score
COLLEGE PLACE - Christian McDonald scored a game-high 20 points Wednesday night as the Whitman men's basketball team raised its record to 7-0 with a 101-65 victory over Walla Walla University on Windemuth Court.

McDonald was one of 13 Missionaries to score at least two points in the NCAA Division III-NAIA matchup.
Ethan Osias led the Wolves with 19 points.

Whitman's Jack Stewart helped the guests fashion a 13-2 run that resulted in a 23-10 lead by the 12:22 mark of the first half. He converted a layin off a Wolves' turnover with 14:20 on the clock, buried a 3-point jumper from the left corner with 13:36 left, and assisted on a McDonald trey that ended the two-minute, 10-second surge.

"The offense was there, but our defense started getting stops," McDonald said.
WWU rallied midway through the period with an 8-0 spurt that drew it within three, 30-27, at the 8:24 mark. Osias tallied seven of the points on a pair of 3s and a free throw.

"We were being aggressive and we were able to create easy looks at the basket with dribble penetration or dribble penetration and a kickout," WWU coach Jimmy Hill said.

The Wolves cut the deficit to two on three occasions - 34-32, 36-34, and 38-36 - before Whitman closed out the half on a 12-3 blitz that included the last eight points of the frame. Jo Jo Wiggins and Tim Howell scored baskets while Montez White and McDonald contributed two charity tosses apiece.

The Missionaries led 50-39 at halftime.

"We had more intensity and applied more ball pressure," McDonald said. "They got more tentative on offense."

Whitman busted the game open by outscoring Walla Walla 26-13 in the first eight minutes and change of the second half. Austin Butler set the tone with a layin 16 seconds after intermission following a Wolves' miscue.
"Austin came up huge for us," McDonald said. "We carried that through the whole half."

"We got a little soft with the ball," said Hill, whose team committed 21 turnovers. "When you make questionable decisions, they'll pounce on you."

McDonald and Wiggins led the way in the opening minutes of half two with eight and five points, respectively.
Cedric Jacobs-Jones provided the Missionaries with their biggest lead of the game and the contest's final margin on a layup with 15.7 ticks remaining.

WWU hosts Lewis Clark State Saturday night. Whitman's next game comes Dec. 20 when it hosts Millsap College.
