It was Senior Night on the campus of Walla Walla University, and the men's basketball team put on a show, coming away with a big 84-65 win over visiting New Hope Christian College.
Seniors Jordan Spady, and Tyreek Luckett were honored before the game, sharing hugs with teammates, and receiving an ovation from the crowd as they were celebrated for their contribution to the athletic program.
The positive energy and emotion carried over to the start of the game, and the Wolves jumped out to a 14-2 lead. Walla Walla's offense was firing on all cylinders as Luckett was able to get to the basket with ease. When the defense adjusted, the ball was distributed to shooters Jordan Underwood, Spencer Woodworth, and Jordan Collins.
All together the Wolves shot 51% from the field in the first half and held a 44-27 lead at the half.
Turnovers were a problem for the team throughout the game, losing possession 17 times. Walla Walla was able to make up for this with good transition defense, getting back and making things difficult for New Hope, who really just had a tough time scoring.
Cruising to a 19 point win, the Wolves were led statistically by their seniors – Jordan Spady, and Luckett. Spady had a game high 21 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks, while Luckett scored 12 points and handed out three assists.
Spady, coming from North Dallas Adventist Academy in Dallas, Texas put together a strong season manning the post, contributing scoring, defense and rebounding.
Reflecting on his time as a Wolf after the game, Spady said, "It's been lots of fun, and a really big learning experience. Not only for basketball, but for a lot of aspects of life. I'm really grateful for this opportunity to play basketball, and improve as a person."
Luckett, who went to High School at YES Prep SW in Chicago, Illinois missed several games with an ankle injury this year, but was able to get back on the court and finish his season on a high note. He echoed Spady's comments saying, "It's been great. It's been fun playing, and I love my teammates. It's a good program and I'm glad I decided to play."
Both players said they hope their younger teammates keep working, and keep getting better as the team continues to grow and build off the success they had towards the end of this season.
