College Place, Wash- The Lady Wolves defeated the Northwest Indian Eagles on Sunday afternoon to secure their second straight win and improve their record on the season to 2-2.
The Wolves controlled the pace throughout the early portion of the first quarter with good full-court pressure and relentless effort on the boards. A transition bucket by Lexi Ehlers off of a sweet assist from Sierra Briggs gave the Wolves a 10-7 lead with three minutes remaining in the period. The Eagles' Tamisha Yazzie didn't take long to answer back, however, hitting a three to tie up the game at ten. But the three wasn't enough to slow Walla Walla's momentum, as they closed the first quarter with a 16-13 advantage.
Northwest Indian worked their way back in the second quarter, tying the game at 18 with five minutes left before the break. Emillie Hathaway then proceeded to continue her strong play this weekend, putting her defender in a spin cycle and laying the ball in to put Walla Walla back on top with three minutes left to play in the quarter. The Wolves held a 28-24 lead at the half thanks to sharpshooter Alyssa Blankenship, who buried two three-pointers in the final minute of the quarter.
The Eagles came out hot to start the third quarter as Andrea Tulee finished strong at the rim to put NWIC in the lead at 33-32 midway through the period. Walla Walla managed to regain a slim 38-34 lead with two and a half minutes left in the quarter. However a three pointer by the Eagles' Sophie Carrillo in the next possession cut the Wolves lead right back down to one. Valencia Tapuro and Andrea Tylee capped off a great quarter for the Eagles, scoring back-to-back buckets in the final 15 seconds to give their team a 43-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Eagles continued their strong play on offense in the early stages of the fourth quarter, as Andrea Tulee showed some crafty ball-handling to get to the rim and score, giving her team a 51-46 lead. The Wolves didn't give in, cutting the lead to just one at 50-51 and creating some momentum when Lexi Ehlers converted on a transition lay in. Morgan Stanyer kept the spark of momentum alive for the Wolves late in the fourth, sinking a jumper and getting a steal to keep the game within reach at 53-55. The game quickly turned into a barn-burner with 30 seconds left as the Wolves had possession with a chance to tie the game or take the lead with a three-pointer. Morgan Stanyer came through again for Walla Walla, burying a mid-range jumper to tie the game with 17 seconds left. Neither team was then able to convert in the final seconds, sending the game into overtime with the score tied at 55.
The overtime period was a back and forth affair, with both teams trading baskets as the Eagles led by a score of 59-58 with one minute left in the game. Morgan Stanyer would later deliver yet again for the Wolves, hitting a huge shot to put her team up 62-59 with 26 seconds left. Alyssa Blankenship was able to sink her free throws to put the game out of reach as the Wolves won by a score of 65-59.
Northwest Indian College was led by Andrea Tulee who scored 22 points and tallied 9 rebounds as well. The Wolves brought a well rounded attack on Sunday, featuring Alyssa Blankenship who racked up 22 points and 13 rebounds, Morgan Stanyer who scored 10 points, and Emily Downs who also score 10 points.
The Wolves will look to keep their momentum going against Lewis & Clark College on November 25 at 2:00p.m. in Portland, Oregon
