College Place, Wash. –
  • Men's and women's basketball play more non-conference competition this week.
  • The men play Thursday evening in an exhibition game at Whitman College and next Tuesday in their first NAIA action of the season.
  •  The women play back to back this weekend against Northwest Indian College
  • A quick will look at what is happening throughout the league this week in the Cascade Conference.

Men's Basketball

It is not every week that you face a nationally ranked opponent. Over the next six days our men's team will be taking on two of them.  This past weekend the Wolves went 1-1, splitting games with Salish Kootenai College. Saturday night the Wolves lost by 1 to the Bison, in heartbreaking fashion, following a shot made with 2.9 seconds left. However, they rebounded on Sunday, beating the Bison 77-61.
After two games, Alex Calloway is leading the Wolves in scoring with 16 ppg.  Andrew Nye leads the Wolves in assists with 3 apg and has chipped in 10.5 ppg. Dylan Browning is leading the Wolves in rebounds with 12.5 rpg and is second on the team with 15.5 ppg. This week Dylan was recognized as an Honorable Mention for Player of the Week in the Cascade Conference. The Wolves have had a pack mentality this season, with many contributors on both ends of the court.  They currently have 8 players averaging at least 4.0 ppg, and 9 players averaging at least 3.0 rpg.

Thursday, November 9, 7 p.m. @ #9 Whitman College (exhibition)

Last season the Missionaries finished with an overall record of 24-5, and made it to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III National Championship.  Whitman is ranked 9th in the nation in Division III heading into this season.  They return their top scorer from last year, Tim Howell, who averaged 19.4 ppg and 3.1 rpg.  In total, the Missionaries have seven players returning from last year's team, including all three of their top scorers.

Tuesday, November 15, 7 p.m. vs. #15 Lewis-Clark State College

The Warriors of Lewis-Clark State College have a record of 2-2 right now. But don't let that fool you, the Warriors have played two NCAA Division I schools so far this season, and lost to the University of Idaho by only 14 last Friday. They are ranked #15 in NAIA Division I, and have 7 players returning from last season, including their second highest scorer, Doug McDaniel, who averaged 12.2 ppg and 3.6 rpg. The Warriors play two games over the weekend in the Clearwater River Casino & Lodge Classic

Women's Basketball

This last weekend the Wolves battled with Salish Kootenai College, and both games remained close well into the second half before the Bisons pulled away. The Wolves have five players averaging 7.5 ppg or more. The balanced attack is led by Alyssa Blankenship, who is averaging 15 ppg, 5.5 rpg and 2.5 apg. Lexi Ehlers is leading the Wolves in rebounding with 8 rpg and is second on the team in scoring with 12.5 ppg.

Saturday, November 12, 7 p.m. & Sunday, November 13, 2 p.m. vs. Northwest Indian College

The Wolves have two games this weekend against Northwest Indian College. The Eagles are not in the NAIA, but they play a very NAIA-heavy schedule this time of year, recently playing Montana Western and losing both games. The Wolves will gain valuable experience this weekend, as they build toward the opening of Cascade Conference play.

Cascade Conference News

This last weekend, the Corban University Warriors won the men's soccer league championship, defeating the University of Great Falls Argos 3-0. The Warriors are headed to the NAIA National Tournament for the fourth consecutive year.  Rocky Mountain College was this year's regular season champion, and they are also headed to the NAIA National Tournament.  The tournament begins November 19 at home sites, and ends on December 3, in Delray Beach, Florida.
Right now we are in the middle of the CCC volleyball league tournament.  Friday is the semifinals, with College of Idaho taking on Eastern Oregon and Northwest University playing Corban University.  College of Idaho was the only team to defeat Eastern Oregon this season.  The league championship will take place Saturday, November 12 at Eastern Oregon University.
