Men’s Basketball: Knights Too Much For Wolves

Portland, Ore. – The Wolves face a tough challenge this weekend as they faced a very tough Warner Pacific team who is yet to lose a Cascade Collegiate Conference game.  The Wolves rebounded slightly on Saturday night but a late push in the second half was not enough to overtake the Knights, and the Wolves dropped back-to-back games to Warner Pacific.
 
Wolves vs. Knights, December 16
 
The tone was set early by Warner Pacific, who jumped out to a 12-1 lead to start the game.  After getting down 37-13 with just under six minutes remaining in the half, the Wolves push to get back into the game.  With 1:09 on the lock, Jacob Vargas hit a three to top off a 16-8 run. After converting on a pair of free throws on a last second foul, Walla Walla went into halftime down 50-31. 
 
To open the second half, Wesley Burke and Jacob Vargas scored on the Wolves opening two possessions to cut the score to 14 points.  The Knights answered with an 11-4 run that would stop the Wolves momentum.  Walla Walla did cut the lead with 6:05 left on the clock to 16 points, but that is as close as they would get, as they lost 93-71 to the Knights.  Walla Walla's Dinesh Brown scored 16 points in his first game of the season. Wesley Burke and Jacob Vargas each had 11 points, and Alec Calloway led the team in rebounding with six. Montel Shirley was Warner Pacific's leading scorer with 15 points.

Dylan Browning drove the lane for a layup in traffic and followed that up on the next possession with a kick-out three-pointer to give Walla Walla a 5-2 lead to open the game.  The Knights recovered, and after drilling back-to-back three's they had built an 11-5 lead with just over 17:14 to go.  The game stayed relatively close over the next five minutes, but Warner Pacific slowly built up a double-digit lead.  Warner's Keaton Bankofier hit a three with five seconds on the clock as the Knights went into halftime with a 54-29 lead. 
 
Warner remained in control throughout the second half, and the closets the Wolves would get is cutting the lead to 15 points with 2:37 remaining in the second.  Despite being down big for the majority of the half, Walla Walla played hard to the end, and with just under a minute to go, Dinesh Brown scored the game's final bucket, as Walla Walla lost to Warner Pacific 86-68. 
 
Walla Walla is off for the holiday season until December 29, when they host Eastern Oregon University.
