The Walla Walla University Women's basketball team lost to New Hope College, Saturday evening in College Place by a final score of 56-65.
It was senior night for the Wolves, and before the game, senior forward Lauren McCoy was honored for her play and contribution to the Wolves over the past three seasons.
When the game tipped off, McCoy got off to a quick start offensively, scoring six points on a few baseline jump shots.
Michaela Garcia hit a tough shot from deep, and the Wolves found themselves trailing by five points around midway through the half.
But it was at this midway point where the Wolves started to run into a few problems. They were allowing New Hope College several second chance opportunities by not securing defensive rebounds. Another issue was turnovers resulting in transition baskets.
Consequently, Walla Walla trailed New Hope at the half 24-40.
One thing that can't be taken away from this group is their resilience. To start the half, Garcia got the team back on track knocking down another three pointer.
Freshman guard, Jennifer Sousa entered the game and made two shots of her own from deep.
The Wolves got the deficit down to 11 points with 11 minutes to go. After that it was nine points with nine minutes to go. Walla Walla got within four points, and the momentum really looked to be on their side.
New Hope players Jessica Logan, and Ellie Gould did their best to stop this run. Logan secured more of her game high six offensive rebounds, and Gould made some difficult shots to help their team hang on for the victory.
The Wolves were led statistically by Lauren McCoy. She finished with 10 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Michaela Garcia had a game high 15 points and added three steals. Lauren Pernu contributed 10 points along with three rebounds.
WWU will look to finish their season on a high note, with a rematch against New Hope on Sunday (Feb. 22).
